Some types of coffee are accused of being carcinogenic, others bad for blood sugar, while a third type is highlighted for the inhibitory effect on the development of all kinds of ills like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s and type 2 diabetes.

In addition to the fact that your coffee intake should of course be associated with great enjoyment (and not addiction), it can also be directly beneficial to your health if you choose the right type.

We have talked to a leading coffee scientist Kjeld Hermansen and dietitian Anne Seidelin, who explain what makes your coffee healthy and what makes it the opposite.

# 6 The Latte

If coffee is to be served to many, the plunger is a favorite method that is easy and straightforward. But because the water draws with the coffee beans even after you push the filter down, most of the two harmful substances are excreted by this method, which makes the plunger a weak candidate for the healthiest and best cup, even if it can taste heavenly.

  • What it is: A simple method of coffee brewing, which provides a rich coffee. Coarsely ground coffee beans are poured with water and pressed down into the bottom of the pot using a plunger with a wire screen. 
  • Tip: Take the foam off the top with a spoon before putting the top on and stamping the coffee.
  • Health value: You do not take damage from a cup of punch coffee occasionally, but high consumption can be questionable. The problem is the coarse pitcher’s coarse filter, which allows several harmful substances to seep into the coffee. A daily intake of 4-5 cups of plunger coffee may involve a risk of cholesterol levels and the blood content of the blood vessel harmful substance homocysteine.

  • What is it: Concentrated, intense coffee, served in a small cup and is also the basis for popular coffee drinks such as caffe latte and cappuccino. Made by pressing 92-95 degrees hot water at high pressure through a small, tightly packed portion of coffee.
  • Tip: The lead time for an espresso should be approx. 25 seconds.
  • Health value: When it comes to the content of cafestol and kahweol, espresso places itself in the middle field. The content of the potentially harmful substances is lower than in, for example, stamp coffee, but higher than in filter coffee. The espresso gives you all the coffee’s antioxidants and is rich in the substance N-methylpyridinium, which among other things. It reduces stomach acid production and therefore espresso may actually be more gentle on the stomach than other types of coffee. 

# 3 Coffee Capsules & Pods

Research on this type of coffee is also minimal, but the diet supervisor points out that the variant, made of small “pillows” that act as filters, and not foil, is the healthiest alternative of the two, because kahweol and cafestol will probably be sorted from, as is also the case with filter coffee.   • What is it: A big hit in recent years. The coffee in the small capsules is available in countless flavors, and the machine makes a cup of coffee in an instant.
  • Tip: Before brewing, rinse the machine thoroughly. So your coffee gets the right temperature and you avoid the taste being affected by leftovers from the previous brew.
  • Health value: The health effect is not known with certainty, but a 10 times higher content of coffee fat than in filter coffee does not speak to the capsule’s advantage. However, many cups need to be taken daily before there is a risk of cholesterol levels. A study last year showed a high prevalence of bacteria and fungi in capsule machines, so that lack of hygiene can drag down the health account.

If you have also heard rumors that the freeze-dried pearls are bad for your health, then there is good news. For Nescafé and other instant coffee types boast a second place here on the list. This is because the coffee is made in the same way as the filter coffee before it is freeze-dried and therefore the harmful substances are minimized. And this is the way forward if you want the healthiest cup.

Rumors that the type here should be carcinogenic are also just that; rumors. A new study, according to the coffee scientist, disproves the theory that the freeze-dried coffee should cause cancer, so you can safely mix a cup.

  • What is it: Today every 5 cups of coffee in Denmark are made from instant coffee. The powder consists of 100 per cent. coffee. The beans are roasted, ground and dissolved in high temperature water. It provides a viscous coffee concentrate, which is then either freeze-dried or spray-dried to the finished powder.
  • Tip: Use the powder within 4-6 weeks after opening, where it tastes best.
  • Health value: Coffee roe does not have much left over for the powder coffee, but in terms of health there is no indication that it is inferior to ‘real’ coffee. Most of the harmful substances are filtered off in the drying process. The caffeine content is significantly lower than in, for example, machine coffee. This is a disadvantage if you go for the stimulating effect, but an advantage if you experience, for example, sleep problems when you are taking caffeine.
