You must’ve seen white coffee in the headlines these days. Now, you’re confused as to what it actually is?

It’s a fairly new beverage in the West that has left people bewildered. But, not to worry, you’re in the right place. Keep reading to find out more.

What is White Coffee?

Contrary to popular belief, white coffee hasn’t appeared out of thin air. It originated in Yemen many years ago and is now making its way to the US.

It has nothing to do with Flat White or any other relatively lighter-looking coffees. In fact, it gets its name from the color of its beans. The coffee beans are roasted lightly at 325°C and taken out before the first crack. The resulting beans are light in color hence its name.

What Does White Coffee Taste Like?

The most important question is, will you like it? Well, that depends.

White coffee has a more nutty flavor to it compared to its counterparts, thanks to the light roast. The roasting process also decreases the bitterness as the sweetness of the beans is still pronounced. That also means that it can taste more acidic than regular coffees.

The jury is still out on its caffeine content though. Some say the difference is negligible, some say it is more caffeinated than regular ones, while a few even say that the caffeine ratio is less. So, it hasn’t been settled so far.

The bottom line is that white coffee is going to taste quite different from any other coffee you’ve had. That can be either good or bad depending on your preferences.

How Can You Make One?

Maybe your local coffee shop doesn’t offer this option (yet) or maybe you just want to try it out for yourself. Whatever the reason, here’s how you can easily prepare white coffee at home.

First, you need to make sure you get pre-ground beans. Since this coffee is lightly roasted, that means that the beans are considerably hard. They can only be ground properly by an industrial-level grinder.

Espresso

It is best to use an espresso machine to make this kind of coffee. There are two things that can differ while making this shot.

First, some say that you shouldn’t tamp the grounds in your portafilter, while some say you should. I say try it both ways, what’s the harm?

Second, you might want to run the water twice through the grounds. This may seem against every espresso rule, but making white coffee is the exception.

In the end, you should get a silky smooth shot.

Others

You can try other types of equipment like AeroPress, French Press, Drip-Maker, etc.

However, you will have to experiment and figure out the best option for yourself. It is a fairly new drink so no one has the perfect brewing method just yet.

Benefits of White Coffee

You may be asking yourself, why should I even give this coffee a try?

White coffee has more chlorogenic acid which is an antioxidant. In simpler terms, this coffee may be better for your health than regular or black coffee. Some also say that it’s easier on the stomach compared to others.

The research is still pretty inconclusive but for now, the general consensus seems to be that white coffee is better for you.

Final Thoughts

If you love coffee and can easily access this new hype then I would say, go for it.

Stepping out of your comfort zone can be intimidating but if you want some change in your caffeine routine, then this might be a new contender!
