The fact that it is an American product shows from the moment you stand with the box in your hands. A stars and stripes with the text “Made in USA” fall into the eye. More prominent, however, are the many quotes from consumers who in American say that the brewer “is the best brewer I have ever owned”, “makes the best latte I’ve ever tasted”, “is incredibly easy to use” and much more. They are not known to be modest with their products, the Americans.
Lets find out if the quality matches the talk..
Aeropress: A simple brewer – in plastic!
After unpacking, I just had to spend a few minutes looking through the Aeropress, which consists of several loose parts, which must be assembled into one unit at each brew.
All parts are made of plastic – and solid plastic, I should rather hurry to say. It does not seem like something that breaks from one day to the next. However, I think it’s a bit unfortunate that EVERYTHING is made of plastic. I liked that some of the things were made of slightly more “exclusive” materials. Or at least something that might look a little more exclusive than dark plastic, but conversely, price and materials are very well connected here.
However, like so many other things, it is a matter of taste. And the advantage of the all-round plastic theme must, in addition to durability, be the ease of transport and cleaning. Combined, the brewer can quickly get stuck in a pocket pocket if you want to brew at school, workplace, wilderness trip or other places where you lack a coffee machine.
Besides the coffee – of course – boiling water is the only thing you need. And after use, it just needs to be rinsed off and wiped off daily.
But how does such a “plastic brewer” work? And can it compare with other simple coffee makers in the price range?

The AeroPress coffee maker has quickly become popular with coffee enthusiasts around the world. The AeroPressen is easy to use, quickly brews a cup of coffee and is easy to clean. And then it brews amazing coffee. It combines espresso brewing and filter coffee brewing in one brewing method. It removes all the bitterness from the coffee and provides a soft, clean and at the same time intense cup of coffee.
AeroPress is a manual coffee maker that does not use electricity. You just need good coffee and boiling water, then you are able to brew 1-2 cups of coffee in about 1 minute.
As AeroPress is so small, it can come with a handful of filters in the cottage and on holiday, so you can make a delicious cup of coffee wherever you can get boiling water.
How to brew with an Aeropress?
In fact, just getting used to the Aeropress, I think it is very simple and quick to make coffee. Depending on how you choose to brew (it can be done in several ways), it doesn’t take much more than a few minutes. However good it may be, you are a master of yourself to some degree. I would, for example. always recommend that you use freshly roasted (max. 2 months old) and freshly ground (just before use) beans.
I have tried two different brewing methods for the Aeropress; my experience-based “pour-over” method and a method that was used by the Cafeteria. There is no big difference in taste. However, I find my own method simpler, and I like that the beans are allowed to bloom a little before brewing , as this is something I have good experience with from my Hario V60.
The doses you will need in both cases are 16 g of medium-sized beans (beach sand) and 230 g of water (equivalent to 2.5 dl).
Two brewing methods for AeroPress – The regular Top Down and Inverted Method
When it comes to brewing an AeroPress, there are two primary brewing methods. The first method is the one described in the instructions that come with the AeroPress box. It is the usual Top Down method. There are many who are in favor of the common method as it was the first way brewed on an AeroPress and it is considered the official way.
There are both advantages and disadvantages to both brewing methods.
Part of the downsides is something we’ve only experienced 1-2 times out of the hundreds of times we’ve brewed coffee with an AeroPress. So don’t be intimidated.
Top Down Method (Official way)
- You risk not blocking the filter screw with coffee grounds.
- When water is poured into the chamber, water cannot be prevented from dripping through the filter into the cup. Water that has not been part of the brewing.
- If you are new, it can be difficult to control this brewing method as the water starts to flow through.
- You do not need to put the plunger in to keep the water in the brewing chamber.
- You don’t have to put it in a cup, but you can just put it on the table.
- You have better control over the water in the chamber.
- Coffee grounds can be placed where you need to turn the filter holder on, so you have to remove it before you can get the filter holder on.
- If you are careless, you may run the two parts apart when turning the AeroPressen.
- If you do not wet the filter, the filter may fall from the filter screw and onto the coffee before you apply the filter screw.
My AeroPress recipe – pour-over method:
- Separate the plunger from the tube.
- Place a filter in the filter holder and rinse it with a little boiling water to clean it (be careful if you have the filter holder in your hand).
- The filter holder / filter is screwed onto the tube and the coffee beans are poured into the tube and down onto the filter (use the supplied funnel if necessary).
- If you have used pour-over brewing before, you know the aforementioned blooming process . I also used it here. Pour a little boiling water on the beans so that they are moistened (shake it slightly). A lot of gases are now released from the beans. I let them bloom for approx. 20 sec. or until they are degassed or dried (the water slowly passes through the filter during the process).
- Then pour the rest of the water over the beans with a fixed circulating beam. Quickly afterwards, the plunger is gently applied so that the vaccum is formed and the beans can stand and brew, without the water running through.
- When it has been standing for approx. 20 seconds, with a gentle hand, start pressing the plunger almost to the bottom, with your coffee cup underneath. Only almost to the bottom, not to squeeze out too many bitters.

Coffee AeroPress recipe – Upside-down:
The recipe i prefer for AeroPress brewing follows the method known as “inverted brewing” or “Upside Down”. This means you turn your AeroPress upside down when brewing. We have experience in this way that you have better control over the brewing and get a more uniform brewing where all the water is in contact with the coffee beans for an equal amount of time.
Before you get started with boiling water, be sure to find a cup or jug where your AeroPress can fit.
First, collect your AeroPress and place it in the reverse position. It is in the reverse position when the top is the end where the filter screw is to be mounted. The filter screw is the black capsule with holes in it.
Grind 16 grams of coffee beans. We recommend fresh coffee beans. Pour the ground coffee into the AeroPress. You can use the supplied funnel to make sure you do not hit coffee in the groove where the filter screw is to be screwed.
Use either a metal filter for AeroPress or one of the supplied paper filters. If using a paper filter, be sure to wet the filter with boiling water, to clean the filter, and to hold it on the filter screw.
Use a timer to keep track of brewing time. Here you can just use your mobile phone. We recommend brewing the coffee so that the water is only in contact with the ground coffee, for a total of 1 minute. Start your timer and fill up the AeroPressen. Be careful not to fill too much water as it may run over the edge and insert coffee grounds into the groove where you need to screw in the filter screw.
Use the supplied stirrer to stir the coffee a few times to ensure that all the coffee is in contact with the water.
Now you can screw the filter screw with the wet filter onto the collar of the AeroPress. Keep an eye on time.
Once the filter is turned on, gently flip the AeroPress and place it on top of a pitcher or cup that fits the size of the AeroPress. When your timer passes approx. For 45 seconds, quietly press the coffee down into the cup.
TIP: Wait for coffee after 4-5 minutes. Then the coffee tastes more.
So how does coffee from an AeroPress taste?
As with many other brewing methods, the energy and passion you put into each cup of coffee reflects the taste. If you spend a good amount of time thinking about it, the result will mostly be good, is my experience. Therefore, it can be difficult to give the Aeropress all the credit for the good coffee it makes.
Choosing freshly roasted coffee beans and even grinding them immediately before use will greatly affect the taste.
However, it should not take all the credit from many of the brewing units that are now available. Of course, the thing must be in order – and so is the AeroPress.
It is simple, compact and quick to make an excellent cup of coffee if you are on budget or do not bother to have large machines to stand. Or if you just want to bring a good brewer on the go.
Whether it makes “the best coffee I’ve ever tasted”, as the quotes claim, will remain subjective.

Which filters are good for an AeroPress?
When you buy an AeroPress, paper filters are included in the package. These filters are basically really good. If you brew with a paper filter, it holds pretty well on the oils contained in the coffee. It gives the brewed coffee some ease.
The most recognized metal filters are from the American company ABLE brewing. They produce both stainless steel filters and a special edition stainless steel with 18 carat gold coating. The Gold edition has no taste effect. It’s just pure bladder.
The metal filters are available in two versions: fine and ordinary. The difference between the two is how much they let through the filter. The perfectly fine filter will provide a cleaner cup of coffee than the coarser filter.
When you use a metal filter over a paper filter, you pass several of the oils in the coffee down into your cup. It gives a round and bold feel to your cup of coffee.
The clear advantage of using a metal filter is its durability – it can be used again and again. A regular paper filter must be discarded after use. A metal filter should last for several years if you take good care of it. In particular, care must be taken not to bend them. Here, the fine metal filter is more exposed than the regular metal filter, as the fine metal filter is thinner.
What filter should i choose?
We have no taste preference for choosing paper filters over metal filters, or vice versa. What matters most is whether you will be able to recycle your filter, or think it is practical just to be able to push the coffee grounds and paper filter out into the trash. Here in the Cafeteria we use paper filters in our daily brewing at AeroPress.
Brewing a cup of coffee on an AeroPress is quick
On an AeroPress you can make a really good cup of coffee very quickly. Pretty much as fast as if you were making a cup of instant coffee. The result, however, is light years better – well noticeable if you use good coffee beans.
It is easy to clean an AeroPress
An AeroPress is surprisingly easy to clean. When you’re done brewing, unscrew the filter screw and push the plunger through, over a trash can. Then the coffee grounds smoke directly into it and you can now rinse the rubber stamp.
It is difficult to brew many cups of coffee
However, the challenge is that you can only make one cup at a time. If you visit a friend, you have to go again and if the whole family is visiting then it will be a bigger job. Here, a regular filter coffee machine will be better choice.
Storage of your coffee beans
Store the coffee beans dry and refrigerate. A kitchen drawer is perfect. It is a joke that coffee should be stored in the fridge or freezer. In a refrigerator you will find a lot of different scents such as cold cuts, meat, cheese, etc. This fragrance can be transferred to coffee. Some also recommend that coffee beans should be stored in the freezer. We would not recommend doing this as the low temperature destroys the natural aromatic oils in the coffee and causes it to change character. Often it is best to store the coffee beans in the bags they come in. If the bags of coffee you bought do not self-close, you can use a bag shutter that closes completely tight.
Always remember to go for whole coffee beans rather than ground coffee. The shelf life is longer, the taste is better and a wonderful scent spreads when the coffee is ground. The scent is unmatched because they kick-start your olfactory receptors and help improve the whole taste experience. Grind only the coffee you need. Unless you have your coffee maker grinding your coffee beans, good coffee will not be ground. Full stop.
How coarse should i grind my beans?
If you need to make filter coffee, you will need to grind medium-rough for your AeroPress. If you want to make espresso coffee (or try this) then you should grind as nicely as possible and use espresso coffee (however, we will concentrate on filter coffee as we think an AeroPress is best for it. It will never be a real espresso coffee , as you know it from the big shiny Italian espresso machines.
Questions and answers
Should I pour cold or hot water into the electric kettle?
You should always pour cold water into the kettle, as hot water contains more bacteria when it comes directly from the tap. The hot water comes from a hot water tank, while the cold water comes directly from the waterworks where it has been purified.
The optimum water temperature for coffee brewing is 93-96 degrees. Since it is difficult to measure it, we say that you can leave your kettle for approx. 2 minutes after allowing the water to boil to reach the desired temperature between 93-96 degrees. Of course, this is only indicative as the temperature can vary from electric kettle to electric kettle.
Do I have to pour up a certain way? Should I pour in circles?
When pouring make sure to hit all the coffee. Remember you need to stop pouring at the line. If you pour too much into it you may end up having coffee all over. Do not pour too fast, it is easier to control when tilting slowly. Use approx. 10 sec. from start to finish. Some choose to stir with a stirring stick, or a spoon when poured. We do not recommend this as the process becomes erratic. When you stir in the coffee, the same thing happens when you pour a tea letter around the boiling water because you are impatient. Extraction rate is raised. This means in even Danish that the flavors are extracted from the coffee faster. There is nothing wrong with this in itself. The problem is that you can stir too much, which results in the coffee becoming too strong and bitter, because too many bitter substances are extracted from the coffee.
Should I heat the aeropress?
A good idea is that when you rinse your filter with boiling water to make the filter ready for use and to remove any. Taste of paper then you use this water to heat your AeroPress. If you brew directly into a cold AeroPress then you risk getting a bit too bitter coffee because the water cools too much when it hits the cold plastic. (read section on water temperature)
Should I use a descaling pot?
You can easily get a good cup of coffee out of your beans even if you do not descale the water before use. The most important thing is that you have good quality coffee beans – so it goes well. If you want to nerd a bit though, then it would be a good idea, depending on where you live, to get yourself a descaling jug (if you have an espresso machine then you MUST use lime-poor water, but that’s another story). When you use good specialty coffee beans, they will often be lightly roasted to preserve the good taste and acidity of the coffee beans. The acid is really important for the taste experience. It makes your cup of coffee taste fresh and sparkling, and adds an extra dimension to the experience. If the coffee has fruit notes then they also hide in the acid. Finally, do not connect sour and sour. In this context, there are two different things.
If you live in an area where there is a lot of lime in the water, this will put a damper on the acid in the coffee. They say that the water is “hard”. If, on the other hand, you live in a place where there is not much lime in the water, then you do not need to use a descaling pot. It is said that the water is “soft”. Should I drink the coffee right away, or wait a bit?
When you’re done brewing your coffee, it’s tempting to drink it right away. Do yourself the favor of waiting a few minutes until just allowed to stand and cool down a bit. preferably 3-4-5 min. It is a joke that coffee should be drinking baldness – those who have invented that term are those who invented bad coffee. When something is very cold, or very hot, it is difficult for the tongue to taste all the shades of what is being consumed. There is a reason that in some places coffee is served that is so hot that it is burning through the cup. So wait a bit and your taste buds will be happy.
