Who makes this statement? Me. And it is right. This is due to the good Luigi Mazzer, who messes up the original saying. Strictly speaking, for 71 years, because for so long the company from Scorzè, which is located near bella Venezia, has only been build coffee grinders.
And that’s just as well.
Starting with a model, the customer now looks at an extensive product portfolio. Among others, the Mazzer Mini A and Mini B.
The selection of grinders is now varied and almost unmanageable.
Names such as Robur, Kold, Kony, Lux, DR and Major show the different mill segments with some marginal differences such as engine power and size of the bean hopper and grinding disks.
In addition to the “Mini” series, the best known is the “Super Jolly”, which is often used in the catering sector. Often traded as a used model and purchased by private individuals, the setup mostly fails because of the bella machine’s thickness and the low wall cabinet in the kitchen.
So, here the moment where the “mini-series” begins.
Let’s quickly take the data sheets and compare:
“Mini” height 470 mm, Super Jolly 610 mm and – not to mention – Major 635 mm.
In this case, “under” beats the “upper” exceptionally, the wall cabinet fraction will agree with us.
Like the “Mini-Series”, the “Super Jolly” has 64 mm grinding notes, which is a clear plus for many other competitors, since some 54 mm or even 58 mm discs are installed. Only the Major has 83 mm blades and in contrast to the “Mini” with 250 watts, “Super Jolly” 350 watts, for the home baristas shaking head 650 watts.
The “Mini” would move like a manoeuvrable gondola in the Venezia lagoon. At the same time, the Major, with its 20 kg combat weight, would rather be a static aircraft carrier on the Grand Canal.
A or B?
I have now come to a long-running favourite “Mini”. The Mazzer company, which by the way is not spoken “Maiser” but rather hard Italian “Matzer”, doesn’t make it easier for you.
Because in addition to the pretty “Mini A”, the interested customer will also find a no less beautiful “Mini B” on the shelves. The differences between the two are quickly dealt with:
While the first series “B” attracted attention due to the imprecise adjustment of the grinding time using the potentiometer and was probably due to its niche existence, Mazzer presented the “Host” in Milan and “Sigep” in Rimini at the end of 2015 “Rinnovata B” in front.
Since the changeover, the adjustment has been made in the same way as on the “A” with the same dots using the digital adjustment on three buttons.
All buttons can be found on the lower body of the Mazzer. The operation could also be called “single-handed”.

Setting the grinding quantity
The programming is as plain as it is simple.
Press the “Menu” button for around three seconds; then the mode switches to “Programming”.

Then select the reference button for single or double powder quantity.
The engine running time is now displayed in seconds. If adjustment is desired, only adjust the reference duration using the “+” and “-” buttons.
The minis are not exactly known for their brisk working method: around 14 seconds have to be planned for 14 grams. But this is exactly where the rabbit is not completely perfect. The grinder is not quite as smart as some of the other competitors: 7 grams, for example, 9 seconds, but 14 grams are not 18 seconds – due to engine start-up, etc., the grinder has to be readjusted for a lengthy adjustment (1 or 2 cups).

Depending on the type of bean and taste, 12 – 18 grams in different grinds are required. Remember that the Mazzer also has a scatter in the powder amount of approx. +/- 0.5 grams.
Set the grinder shorter from the first grinding process, carry out the grinding process and then read the quantity on the scale’s display and adjust the motor running time in stages.
This is the easiest way and is extremely easy on the nerves of coffee lovers. Or always use the scale and keep the “hand” button pressed until the desired amount of powder has landed in the portafilter.
A “manual” mill would then suffice, but it was thrown out of the portfolio a long time ago.
The crema crema tip
Who doesn’t dream of a large grinder with a reference time of three seconds for 14 grams? Be honest …
However, it should be said: the larger the grinding disks, the larger the dead space. The shows the amount of powder remaining in the grinding chamber.
This means that “exactly” and not “should” land the same amount of powder in organic waste the first time it is used after standing for around one day. In the mill we tested, the dead space is around four to six grams.

At the lower part of the bean hopper, there is a slide that separates the bean feed.

The built-in 64 mm grinding disks produce an excellent image for some types of espresso such as the 100% Robusta from the Ziener roaster Schwäbisch Gmünd (India Parchment AB).
The result is also good with the Lucafé “Espresso Classic” if a little sluggish – but this only marginally tarnishes the overall impression. If the grinding quality suffers, worn discs could be the reason.
However, according to the manufacturer, around 130 kg of beans or around 18,000 individual coverings have to go through the mill until the exchange is due. The grinding disks can be replaced with little effort. Cost around 40 euros – a fair price announcement.
With a look at the accessories shelf, Mazzer offers a few niceties such as a standalone tamper and smaller 320 g instead of the 600 g standard hopper or even a magnum one-kilo hopper for the coffee junkies.
If you want to show everyone that he is THE Mazzer among us, there are caps and polo shirts on top.
But the best comes at the end: everyone knows the importance of fresh beans.
Full hoppers with coffee that stay there for a week lose immense taste and crema.
Therefore, few providers offer a day shopper, especially for Mazzer. To put it mildly, it looks a little daunting, and when handled correctly, it brings enormous freshness benefits.
For 79.00 €, not a cheap but an absolutely worthwhile investment.
Take it or leave it?
All Mazzer products are worthwhile products that are almost indestructible because they are of very high quality.
Even the Mini weighs around 10 kilograms and represents a solid entry into the world of the luxury class.
Price ranges between € 610 and € 670 depending on the colour scheme.
Whether it is the “A” or the “B” is technically irrelevant and is only a question of the viewer’s personal taste.
Conclusion: “Whoever says A can also like to say B” – so I were right.
