The influence of coffee on the circadian rhythm

It has been tested in the US whether coffee, including more specifically hot beverages, can be decisive for new acquaintances, as well as the way we handle the situation. A number of test persons were tested here, where half were equipped with a cold drink in their hands, conversely the other half was equipped with a hot drink (coffee). After that, all the test subjects were presented with new acquaintances.

Even if you can’t go down to the local cafe, order a large cup of coffee and for that reason put a little extra life in the bank, everything suggests that coffee is good for health. But we still do not know for sure whether coffee is exactly the cause of the longer service life. The conclusion is based on an observational study. 

“We can never say directly about the cause and effect of these observational studies because we look at what people are doing and how they are doing many years later. If we could directly say something about how you influence your risk of dying by drinking coffee, we should do a study where we determined the coffee intake for a large group of people and watched them afterward, ”says Anja Olsen. 

At the same time, it is important to remember that the extended lifespan, which scientists believe is likely to be gained by drinking coffee, is an average consideration.

This means that you as an individual should not count on being able to extend life by drinking coffee. In principle, it may as well be your coffee-drinking neighbor – and not you – who will live longer. 

“You can never say that exactly you live three months longer, but the study shows that on average, those who drink coffee live three months longer. One can never make a general conclusion and transfer it to the individual level. It’s an average, “says Anja Olsen. 

Despite the fact that there are observational studies examining the average health benefits of drinking coffee – and thus not a direct scientific mapping of the effect of coffee – Anja Olsen believes that we can well trust that coffee, in general, does more good than rubbish for health. 

“There have been really many studies of coffee that have tried to prove that it is harmful. But there is nothing to suggest that it is. When we have many studies that find similar results of coffee drinking and those even made on different populations, it moves us in the direction that it is actually enough. And that suggests everything, even if it is an observational study. ” 

Anja Olsen would like to recommend you to drink coffee if it suits your taste. 

“You can drink your coffee with a good conscience. Everything suggests that it is indeed healthy for us. And they have completely rebuked that it should be harmful to the vast majority of us. ” 

A British study of 498,123 people found that the ones who habitually drank coffee were between 10 and 15 percent less likely to die during any 10 year period than non-coffee drinkers.

Coffee touted as a health culprit 

That coffee is probably healthy, although we have for decades thought the opposite, Kjeld Hermansen completely agrees. He is clinical associate professor at the Department of Clinical Medicine at Aarhus University and chairman of the working group under the Knowledge Council for Prevention, which prepared the report “Coffee, Health and Illness ” . 

It has been a common myth that for the sake of health you have to take care of how many cups of coffee you drink. But we seem to forget that concern.  

“What can be said is that current science shows that for those who drink coffee, there is a roughly ten percent reduction in mortality.”  

Kjeld Hermansen also emphasizes that the existing studies are looking at coincidences between coffee intake and mortality and that a study that would look at the direct effect of coffee drinking would be good. However, such a study has long prospects as they are extremely expensive and very difficult to conduct, he says.  

However, we may well have confidence in the existing research, even though it does not scientifically investigate the direct effect of coffee. 

“In the observational studies, you try – to the best of your ability – to clear up any disruptive factors that may lead to wrong endings. You try to take into account social factors, smoking, alcohol, physical activity, age, gender, BMI and so on. And when you do, it still seems like there is a beneficial effect of drinking coffee, ”says Kjeld Hermansen.  

When Kjeld Hermansen has to summarize all his knowledge about coffee and health in one sentence, it is then also the beneficial effects he emphasizes. 

“Coffee apparently has a lot of positive effects on health, and there is very little negative to say about it,” he says, emphasizing that he hopes that the issue of coffee’s impact on health will be explored even further in the future. 

Some, however, have to watch out for the coffee 

According to Kjeld Hermansen, there are also a few negative aspects of the refreshing drink. And we better just get them in place. The Knowledge Council for Prevention has previously prepared a report that, based on Danish and foreign studies, looks at what coffee means for health.  

The report concluded conclusively that coffee can reduce the risk of several chronic diseases such as type 2 diabetes and Parkinson’s. But there are groups that need to be careful about consuming too much coffee.  

This applies to people who suffer from anxiety, where the caffeine in coffee, for example, causes several seizures.  

In addition, researchers do not know if a coffee intake of more than three daily cups can be harmful to pregnant women and go beyond pregnancy.  

And for people who have a low calcium intake (lime), coffee means an increased risk of bone fracture. However, the few Danes do not get enough calcium, the report emphasizes. 

No official dietary advice on coffee 

At the National Food Agency, which is behind the official Dietary Council for the Danes, the message says that they do not have specific recommendations or warnings about coffee.  

The official Diet Councils sound that it is advantageous to quench the thirst in water, but actually count coffee in the liquid account.  

However, sugar and cream should be kept in the coffee again.

The disadvantages of drinking coffee

As mentioned, coffee is usually healthy to drink – though not if you tend to have sour bumps, stomach ulcers or too much stomach acid. Here, coffee will make your symptoms much worse because the formation of pepsin and stomach acid is stimulated by coffee.

You should also take care not to consume too much coffee. Doing so can cause unpleasant symptoms. This applies to slight nausea, cold sweat, shaking hands, irritability, and restlessness. In addition, the body produces more of the stress hormone adrenaline if you drink too much coffee.

Therefore, it is recommended that you adhere to the directions of the European health authorities when it comes to coffee intake. They say, as I said, a maximum of 300 mg of caffeine a day, which equals three to six cups of coffee a day.

Adhering to the above caffeine amount of coffee will have a positive impact on your health. And, as I said, there are many health benefits.

Coffee and headaches

If you consume caffeine on a regular basis, such as drinking a lot of coffee, the body turns to it quietly and tolerance develops.
